BuzzFeed

Senior Product Designer, July 2019 — October 2019
Product Designer
, November 2017 — July 2019

I joined BuzzFeed in order to help build out Tasty’s Android app, and I’ve most recently been leading design efforts on the Apps team. My work at BuzzFeed includes:

  • Designing the Tasty Android app in the span of three months; it was later named one of the Google Play Store’s Best Daily Helpers of 2018 as well as a Google Play Store Editor’s Choice.

  • Designing the Tasty Action on Google as part of a multimillion dollar deal between BuzzFeed and Google. BuzzFeed was Google’s first smart display (i.e., Google Hub Home) launch partner, which meant that I was tasked with designing a voice-first experience for smart displays, smart speakers, and mobile devices. The Action was demoed at two conferences — Google I/O and Made by Google — in an effort to encourage other companies to develop their own third party Actions. The Tasty Action on Google also won a Webby in the “Apps, Mobile, and Voice: Food & Drink” category.

  • Designing a standalone experience for Goodful — BuzzFeed’s wellness vertical — in order to support a multimillion dollar licensing deal with Macy’s.

  • Redesigning the BuzzFeed iOS app in its entirety. In the span of less than four months I ran a design sprint, conducted a heuristic evaluation of the current app experience, conducted usability tests, and rapidly produced multiple concepts and prototypes at all levels of fidelity.

  • Serving as the company’s part-time UX researcher. I am responsible for enforcing user research best practices and providing feedback to teams interested in running research. I have single-handedly reviewed every research proposal from February 2019 to present. Since February, BuzzFeed’s tech organization has completed 11 research studies, which is more than we did in all of 2018. I have also created standardized but flexible research study templates — for user interviews, screener surveys, heuristic evaluations, card sorting activities, and usability tests — and templates for sharing the results of research via written reports or presentations. And I have given talks on UX research basics and provided one-one-one coaching on topics including heuristic evaluations, usability tests, user interviews, and survey design.

Yelp

Product Designer, January 2017 — October 2017

My work at Yelp includes:

  • Being one of two designers responsible for designing the search experience across web, mobile web, iOS, and Android platforms.

  • Designing a new mobile review writing flow. My design led to a 6% increase in the number of photos uploaded to businesses, as well as a 3% increase in the number of completed and submitted reviews.

  • Serving as the company’s part-time UX Researcher. I was responsible for overseeing research efforts across platforms and vertical teams, and was also was in charge of hiring a full-time UX researcher. I also ran workshops teaching designers, product managers, and engineers about UX research basics — what UX research is, what it isn’t, when and how to conduct research, how to select the correct method given the current phase of product development — as well as more in-depth workshops on how to create usability test study plans and scripts, and how to facilitate research sessions (both in-person and remotely).
